Curious things have happened as of late though, and I'd like to draw your attention to this picture. I found this two weeks ago, laying in the exact same spot as the bird my daughter found last year. Could it be a coincidence? I dunno.
I thought that at first glance this was the makings of a nest, but the fact is that although this is now dried out, when I originally found what ever this is, the bark was fresh and everything was still moist and pliable, and although the pictures do not do this object justice, this is something that is intracately woven together.
It reminds me of those stick balls one can purchase at a novelty store. I don't know the true name, but they are decorations you hang up or use as a table setting. You probably know exactly what I'm talking about, woven pieces of thin branches and sticks together in the shape of a ball.
This is similar in the fact that when this was found, again the bark was freshly stripped off the branch and woven into a design that is hollow in the middle... One could place their finger straight through the middle.
I thought perhaps the makings of a nest, but I do not know any native birds that use bark peelings for nests... of all the things to use I would think that this would be uncomfortable and not very warm considering the grass clippings... but I'm not a bird, so any body wanna take a stab at this?
This, like the bird, was found less than 10 ft from the side of the house...
